In rural India, from an early age, girls are expected to help their families with all manner of work. Because of this, many are unable to receive a proper education.
The lack of basic schooling, plus the impact of the dowry system, and the demands of family life,- often limit their life opportunities to hard, low-paying physical labor. Social factors as mentioned prevent most women from even considering professional training.
Since 2001, MANGALAM WELFARE’s first priority has been to change this long-standing situation by providing training, -secure jobs,- and stable incomes. Chosen for their disadvantaged backgrounds,- hundreds of women have been trained and have become masters of their crafts, which include hand-weaving textiles, – making clothes, – creating hand bags, leaf paintings to mention a few…
Often oppressed, neglected, mistreated, and even abused, Indian women nonetheless demonstrate a resilience, perseverance, patience, and dependability that is astounding!! In this way, they are able to support their entire families. In recognition of this remarkable tenacity, MANGALAM WELFARE is proud to help these women gain financial independence and a reason to believe in themselves and their capacities…
I got married and had two children when I was about 20 years old. Shortly after my children were born, my husband left us and overnight everything fell apart! I had to face a very hopeless situation as I had no money to raise my children. At that time, my parents were very supportive…They took all three of us under their wing and we moved into their house, where we all lived for several years. I was aware that this situation was not sustainable, there was simply no space for everyone…
In 2016, the MANGALAM WELFARE team became aware of my situation. They offered me a 3-month training in their weaving section, I was happy to join! Having no education, it was a great opportunity to learn and develop new skills. I received training from experienced masters in weaving and, through hard practice of many years, I have become one of the best weavers in my section. With the monthly salary I received, we were able to leave my parents’ small house and rent a decent home for my two children and myself.
