In traditional Indian society,- widows and abandoned women are often ostracized and end up being invisible. Every day they have to struggle to earn enough to provides their children with the necessities of life.
Our counseling project provides these women with emotional support,- job placement services,- help with health, -work,- housing or budgeting issues,- and teaching about how to apply for small government pensions, which are available for widows…
Seen, listened to, and supported, widows face their life situations with more confidence and strength. Another example is that such widows exist in very poor housing. In these cases, MANGALAM WELFARE intervenes to improve their basic living situation. In rare cases, this involves a restructuring of their houses.
A long time ago, I had what one would call a “normal life” which in India means a husband and two children! But one day, everything changed! My husband left me,- moved to another state,- and took with him our two children. I was heartbroken, moneyless and hopeless… Since that day, there is only me and my old mother who needs care. For many years, I struggled to earn just a little money so that we could have enough to eat…Then one day I heard about MANGALAM WELFARE and decided to go to them,- hoping they could help me – and they did. They first found me a stable job as a cleaning lady in a local restaurant, which enabled me to have a regular income. The restaurant opens early in the morning and closes late in the night. At those times there are no buses and I live too far to walk…
So MANGALAM WELFARE came up with the idea of providing me with a scooter so that I could keep this job that I like very much. Now I am able to be on time for my shift. I am so grateful to MANGALAM WELFARE for finding me work and providing me with transportation. Thanks to them, I no longer have to worry about my elderly mother and myself…we will be ok!
