The Covid pandemic highlighted how dependent we all are on our jobs. During that time, those who were able to succeed were those who had an independent income.
As a result of this insight,- we began to offer many needy women one cow each, – and others were offered goats. By milking the cows and raising the goats for milk and sale,- the women are able to develop a regular income,- and in this way, could meet their basic daily needs
A beautiful aspect of this program is that when the cow or goat has a second calf or kid, -once they are big enough to be separated from the mother, the women are required to give one back to the program, so that other needy widows can benefit. Through this life-circle the program will become self-sustainable in future.
My story is quite common for girls born and raised in rural India… When I was 12 years old, my parents married me to a man who was 23 years old. I had no choice but to abide by their wishes… Soon after I got pregnant and had three children in a row. When my husband died, I was only 22 years old… Since I was married at such a young age, I could not receive a proper school education. The only job I could find was working in the fields.
This brought me 200 rupees per day (2,50€), which was clearly insufficient to support my children. Receiving a cow from MANGALAM WELFARE has changed everything! Indeed, by milking the cow twice a day and selling the milk, I have been able to earn an additional 400 rupees per day (5€), which brings me much more respect within the entire family. On top of that, MANGALAM WELFARE is helping my children by paying their school fees. I am so proud of each of them. They love to study and have a lot of ambition…
